Lähtökohtana on, että kohdetta tutkitaan monipuolisesti erilaisia tutkimustapoja hyödyntäen. Tapaustutkimus on erittäin käyttökelpoinen tapa esimerkiksi silloin kun halutaan saada taustainformaatiota ja mahdollisesti myös hypoteeseja myöhempiä jatkotutkimuksia varten. (Aaltio 2014).
